Technologies for ageing and dementia: challenges and opportunities

Mario A Parra

There are growing expectations regarding the benefits that modern technologies can bring to support people affected by mental health diseases, particularly those posing significant health and social challenges such as dementias. The Scottish Dementia Strategy will ensure that people with a diagnosis of dementia and their caregivers are aware of, and have access to, state of the art technologies that can enable people living with dementia to live safely and independently for longer. To provide for such needs, novel technologies will need to be meaningful to the individual, identify and adapt to the changing needs of those affected, be user friendly, and ethically viable. I will discuss recent work our team at the University of Strathclyde is carrying out to overcome these challenges and yield technologies that can meet the ever-growing needs of rapidly ageing populations.
