Abbas is currently a Research Associate in the Wind Energy and Control Centre (WECC), EEE, University of Strathclyde. He obtained his BSc in Civil Enginnering and a Master's degree in Structural Engineering from University of Mazandaran, Babol Noshirvani University, Iran. He spent one year as pre-doc researcher in the Centre for Mechanics and Structural Dynamics (currenltly, Forschungsbereich Strukturdynamik und Risikobewertung von Tragwerken), at Vienna University of Technology, TUWien, Austria. He was awarded a PhD in Structural Dynamics and Wind Engineering as part of Vienna Doctoral Programme on Water Resource System, Research Cluster of Structural Mechanics, TUWien, and continued working there as a post-doctoral researcher one more year.
He has an ample experience of cross-disciplinary research activities since the time of his PhD. Abbas has the experience of research within extensive areas, such as seismic performance analysis of building structures, bridge wind vibration mitigation, wind load identification, vibration testing and operational modal analysis as well as fatigue damage and residual life predication. Abbas has been awarded several grants, including a four-year PhD full fund and PhD abroad research fund, both granted by Austrian Science Fund (FWF), being a visiting scholar in wind engineering and energy centres at Ruhr University of Bochum, Germany and Kyoto University, Japan. Abbas has also been awarded several conference grants and awards such as WindEurope exhibition and conference poster award, Bilbao, Spain, 2019.
Abbas joined Strathclyde's WECC in January 2018. In Wind Energy System applications, he specialises in Mechanics and Dynamics of Structural and Mechanical Systems, across a wide range of topics. His research interests include wind turbine lifetime extension, light-weighting and structural optimisation of direct-drive generator systems (also with application to aerospace electrical machine structures), dynamic improvement of wind turbine drivetrains, testing and modelling methods for blades damping, analysis of offshore support structures and rotary airborne wind systems. He is a UK BSI representative in the IEC-TC88 task for publication of IEC 61400-28 standard. He currently collaborates on a number of national and EU projects with different leading industry and university partners such as FEMM Hub, UK and X-Rotor, EU H2020. He is also the CoI of a number of ongoing research and knowledge exchange partnership, including TIC LCPE projects with SPR and SSE, and also a KTP project with Natural Power. Abbas supervises PhD and research projects as part of WECC's WAMESS CDT.
