KE Associate managing the Information Governance and Policy Unit, in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at the University of Strathclyde. The Unit has a particular emphasis on practitioner training events in Freedom of Information and Data Protection with an in-house coaching and consultancy function, too.
I was previously employed by the United Kingdom information and privacy regulator, namely, the Information Commissioner’s Office in 2011. Here, I was responsible for investigating alleged breaches of the UK and English information laws, negotiating and, where necessary, drafting statutory decision notices for the BBC, Bank of England, NS&I, Royal Mail and the Forestry Commission, among others. I was the strategic contact and compliance liaison for the British government’s company for high speed rail development, namely, HS2 Ltd. And I handled a bountiful case load of complex complaints relating to alleged breaches of the Data Protection Act 1998 by financial institutions, the judiciary and police. Following on, for two years I was a private information governance consultant for Scottish public authorities (and worked on some of the country's most high-profile FOI requests (and disclosures)). I saw public authorities through the appeals process e.g. preparing submissions to the Scottish Information Commissioner and undertaking the negotiations where necessary. I am also expert with DPA 1998 and, as such, drafted privacy, data sharing and other data protection policies for some of Scotland's largest government agencies. I worked with SMEs and their DP requirements: staff training, compliance checks, data audits and crisis management in response to any breaches, among other things. I also committed time and professional work, on a pro bono basis, to persons struggling, for whatever reason, to employ their statutory information rights; this might extend itself to, for example, persons interned or infirm. I am a volunteer researcher to the Campaign for Freedom of Information in Scotland. I’ve spoken at numerous conferences and industry gatherings and, in all the circumstances, I am a well-recognised face on the information governance circuit in Scotland.
