Personal Statement

Julia's research investigates the contributions of international law to small-scale fisheries through the lenses of an ecosystem approach and a human rights-based approach. In specific, it aims to promote the participation of small-scale fishers in co-managing migratory aquatic species.

Academic / Professional qualifications

Julia has an LLM in Global Environment and Climate Change Law from the University of Edinburgh and an LLB with additional domain in International Politics from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro.

Julia has been working as an international legal consultant for the FAO's Development Law Service in projects concerning fisheries and related issues, mainly (i) the implementation of the ecosystem approach to fisheries, (ii) the implementation of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) through fisheries legal frameworks, and (iii) the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries.

Julia is a member of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB-RJ) since 2014.
