Personal profile
Personal Statement
After having completed my degree in Product Design and Innovation (BSc) at the University, I have decided to continue my studies by undertaking a doctorate in engineering focused on advanced manufacturing technology in association with the Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC). I have a very deep interest in design and hope to advance the lexicon of understanding within the field by integrating knowledge of advanced production techniques - the mechanical meeting the abstract.
Aside from academic work, I am also involved with the teaching of design within the department working as a Teaching Assistant for the first year Design 1 class.
Research Interests
My research interests lie both within advanced manufacturing technology and user-centred design - two very different topics of study. While in many cases dealing with precisely the same outcome - a manufactured product – the two fields, at the theoretical level are still not comfortably integrated. The central concern of my research is to address this issue; constructing a coherent narrative between advanced processes and end user-interaction with a product using both quantitative and qualitative investigative methods. Ultimately, the goal is to allow designers and engineers not versed in the technical aspects of state-of-the-art processes to exploit aspects of the technologies and understand the optimal machine operations in the development of their own products.
My other research interests include the study of geometry and form and how this is related to design. Specifically, the study of cultural trends, affordances and semantic associations is of increasing importance to my work.
