Implementation of 'PhD Plus' programme

    Project: Non-funded project

    Description

In 2019 I led the implementation of an innovative and sector-leading “PhD Plus” programme, following a successful proposal and approval process in collaboration with our Science Faculty. This programme allows PhD students in our SIPBS department to ‘top up’ their PhD with a PgCert in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education. The programme aligns with university and wider-sector (particularly our global partners and governments) expectations that PhD graduates have teaching experience and an understanding of pedagogical principles. It is the first programme of its kind in the UK and evidences my ability to ‘read’ the sector and respond strategically.

The first cohort of 8 "PhD Plus" students began studies in 2019/20. While the pandemic slowed growth of the programme a further 3 students began studies in 2020/21 and growth is predicted to be re-established following the pandemic with an estimated cohort of 20 - 30 students annually. The programme is recognised as providing a template for the whole university.
