Innovative Metrology Assessment for Component Inspection

Project: Research - Internally Allocated

Project Details

Innovative Metrology Assessment for Component Inspection is a collaborative programme between University of Strathclyde and SPIRIT Aerosystems based in Prestwick. This work will exploit the results of work funded through both an EPSRC equipment grant, and also the current robotics research from RCNDE research consortium.

This work seeks to integrate an external metrology system into an automated robotic work cell. By utilizing robot mounted photogrammetry, different perspective projections of the same surface features will be incorporated into the CAD model, which will improve overall manufacturing accuracy.

Project Update
The project is progressing well with many underlying logistical activities being undertaken in preparation of receipt of the Spirit Aerosystems photogrammetry metrology equipment. (See attached photographs) Background R&D work of automated metrology measurement is also being undertaken in parallel. Robotic programming is underway for defining an inspection bounding box. Regular weekly meetings and project updates have been provided/scheduled.

Progress against Milestones (as outlined within the IAA funding application)
Please see attached Gantt chart.
Progress is underway on remaining milestones.
Spirit Aerosystems having been supplied with RCNDE application information by the NDEvR (NDE Research Association) manager.
Discussions are at an advanced stage with AMRC with regards to support and collaborative future work.
A number of Spirit Aerosystems personnel have had a detailed tour of the University/Department/Centre for greater exposure on current and future research.

The Future of Activities Supported
As per the Gantt Chart
The core project will continue to be undertaken and managed to ensure a successful conclusion (demonstrator/ report)
Supplementary tasks will be taken to enhance/exploit and transfer R&D knowledge for future projects.
