Troponin (Tn) proteins are the gold standard of biomarkers in myocardial injury. Both TnT and TnI are sensitive and specific in reflecting myocardial damage; however they do not indicate the mechanism of injury. Troponins can be altered in non-cardiac conditions. Many hypotheses have been put forward for the elevation of troponins in dialysis patients; but how do we interpret the results? This study measured TnT in our haemodialysis population and outcome (mortality) was audited over 36 months.
