Abstract

Striking workers in Gdansk and civil rights campaigners in East Berlin; antiglobalisation marches in Seattle and anti-war protests in London; Zapatistas in Mexico and the mothers of the disappeared in Argentina: these are but a few examples which point to the need for understanding the political importance of civil society. Recent years have indeed seen a strong interest in civil society, resulting in a burgeoning literature on the topic (Cohen and Arato 1994; Keane 1998; Rosenblum and Post 2002; Baker 2002a).
