Abstract
This article argues that understanding of life-stage transitions in childhood should include attention to
changes identified by children and young people themselves. This also provides insights into the way in
which children's lives involve an interaction between their current everyday concerns and activities on the
one hand and their awareness of change and age differences on the other hand. Using qualitative data from
children age 10-14 gathered in two studies, attention is drawn to aspects they highlighted about how their
engagement with the world outside home and school altered as they made the journey through middle
childhood into youth.
