Abstract
Peer assessment (PA) has been successfully used as a formative and summative tool in the Chemical and Process Engineering department of the University of Strathclyde. PA has been used in a variety of classes and contexts:
• in peer-marking of individual weekly homework tasks using the Moodle workshop tool;
• in assessing individuals’ contributions in laboratory group reports.
The session will focus on the advantages and disadvantages of using peer assessment as a formative and summative tool. The first part of the session will address the peer marking of individual homework tasks while the second part will discuss the use of PA tools to split laboratory group report grades into individual weighted grades. The session is targeted to lecturers and tutors involved in the teaching of STEM subjects, and the aim is to provide guidelines on how to implement peer assessment in large classes, i.e. classes with more than 100 students.
