Implementation of a pharmacotherapy service within General Practice: an evaluation of the educational resource supporting GP clinical pharmacists

Research output: Contribution to conferencePosterpeer-review

Background: The General Practice Clinical Pharmacists’ (GPCP) Competency and Capability Framework (CCF) is an educational resource designed to support experienced pharmacists’ development within GP sites, broadly in line with the RPS Advanced faculty framework. The role of GPCPs is evolving, operationalised through new pharmacotherapy services developed to reduce GP workload and enable GPCPs to focus on clinical duties.
Aim: To evaluate the CCF’s suitability to support the implementation of the new pharmacotherapy services.
Methods: Proctor et al’s model (1) of implementation outcomes informed the evaluation to explore GPCPs’ perceptions of the CCF’s appropriateness, acceptability, and feasibility. Through email invitations, 164 GPCPs were invited to complete a questionnaire and participate in a semi-structured, telephone interview; participants were also given the opportunity to participate in the interviews by providing their email addresses at the end of the questionnaire.
Results: Currently, 37 GPCPs completed the questionnaire and 11 participated in the interviews. Of the questionnaire participants, the majority were female (n=20, 54.0%) , ten health boards were represented, and median years’ experience within GP sites was 3 (IQR=3-3.25). Of the interview participants, nine were female (81.8%), five health boards were represented, and median years’ experience within GP sites was 3 (IQR=3-3.5). Preliminary analysis indicates that questionnaire responses were generally positive regarding the CCF’s acceptability and appropriateness (median responses =4, IQR 3-4), and feasibility (median response =3.5, IQR 3-4).
Conclusion: Qualitative analysis is ongoing and finalised results, conclusions, and any recommendations will be presented at the SP3AA conference.
