Vapor phase polymerisation of polyaniline within spiropyran poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAAm) photoresponsive hydrogel has been succesfully performed using ammonium persulfate as initiator. The new hybrid material retains the conductive properties of polyaniline and the photoresponsive activity of the pNIPAAm hydrogel, in which the spiropyran unit incorporated in the polymer backbone can be switched by light irradiation between a protonated and non-protonated merocyanine form inducing microrelief surface features in the hydrogel.
